Puntland parliament approves Telecommunications Act

Garowe (SD) – The 13th Session of the 47th Session of the House of Representatives of Puntland State of Somalia was chaired by the Speaker of the House of Representatives DPL Mr. Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril and, 1st Deputy Hon. Abdiaziz Abdullahi Osman and 2nd Deputy Hon, Ismail Mohamed Warsame.

The members of the House of Representatives debated the Puntland Government’s Telecommunications Act and the appendix to the Telecommunication Charges, and finally approved by a show of hands 36 members, while 1 member rejected and 1 member abstained.

The Appendix to the Telecommunications Act details the fees paid by Telecommunications, Posts, Printers, Newspapers, Independent Media, Television and Communication Services operating in Puntland.

The Puntland Telecommunication Law, which contains 38 Articles, has been updated with key provisions on Conflict of Interests, Licensing Application, Penalties and Enforcement Act and will replace Law No. 15 of 17-12-2007 on Communications and Fees.

Somalia is one of the countries that has the cheapest internet and telecommunications services in the world, free enterprises and lack of barriers are credited for the success.
