Puntland: President Deni doubles down on holding contentious elections

Garoowe May 06, 2023 (SD) – The President of Puntland, Said Abdullahi Deni today visited districts in Garowe, where he inaugurated developmental projects.

Deni, who later addressed the community in Awr Culus, urged the people of the area to prepare for the Local Council Elections scheduled for May 25, 2023.

He also noted that the most significant achievement of the government is its success in overcoming the challenges it faced, particularly in ensuring that public officials are elected based on merit, stressing the need for the public to support such initiatives.

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh yesterday stated that Puntland is currently experiencing a political crisis, mainly due to the opposition’s refusal to participate in the electoral process, adding that politicians should focus on rebuilding the country.

President of Puntland, Mr. Said Abdullahi Deni, and his delegation also visited the Garyaqaan area, which is part of the Garowe district, where they were warmly welcomed.

Deni is facing fierce opposition from politicians in Puntland, who are reluctant to change the constitutional provisions that allow more than the currently allowed three-party system. Deni in his speeches today doubled down on holding the one person one vote despite the calls to hold them off.
