Several killed in southern Somalia clashes

MOGADISHU (SD) – Several combatants have been killed and over a dozen others wounded in a fierce fighting between Jubbaland forces and al-Shabaab fighters in southern Somalia.

According to sources, Al-Shabaab fighters have stormed base in Barsanguni village outside Kismayo town, prompting hours long-fighting.

The military official who spoke the local media confirmed that the forces are still in control of the base and inflicted heavy casualties on the militants.

On their part, al-Shabaab claimed to have killed six Jubbaland state soldiers in the attack.

No independent sources confirming the casualties on both sides.

Al-Shabaab has been fighting Somali forces backed by African Union Mission in Somalia for the past decade.

The group lost many towns including the capital Mogadishu after its fighters were defeated by Somali and Amisom troops.

Currently, the group controls dozens of small towns and villages.
