Somali leaders to meet in Mogadishu to review poll process

MOGADISHU (SD) – Somali prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has invited the regional leaders to attend a meeting to review the achievement of recently adopted electoral agreement.

In a twitter post, Somali PM said the meeting will evaluate progress since last month when the federal and regional leaders signed agreement which allows the country to hold elections within two months.

“Somali prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble invited the leaders of the National Consultative Assembly to a meeting in Mogadishu on Saturday to discuss the electoral process achievement since the May 27th agreement and the acceleration of the remaining tasks,” the office of PM said in the statement.

Late last May, Somali Political leaders agreed on a framework for long-delayed national elections which are slated for August this year.

The agreement, that would allow elections within 60 days, was an outcome of the summit convened by Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, after months of escalating tension between the political factions in Somalia.

Parliamentary and presidential elections took place in late 2016 and early 2017 through a system of indirect suffrage.
