Mogadishu March 17, 2023 (SD) – The Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS), the Somali Media Association (SOMA), and Somali Mechanism for Safety of Journalists (SMSJ) have condemned the arbitrary detention of SJS Secretary-General Abdalle Ahmed Mumin and called for his immediate release.
Journalist Abdalle Mumin has been arbitrarily detained in Mogadishu Central Prison since February 23, 2023, after being denied access to his family. He has been held in a cell with no access to legal representation, and his health has deteriorated.
On February 13, 2023, the Benadir Regional Court sentenced Abdalle Ahmed Mumin to two years in prison, following his arrest in October 8, 2022, on charges related to his work as a journalist.
Two months later, on February 23, 2023, a military and police force arrested Abdalle Ahmed Mumin on trumped-up charges.
While attending a meeting of the parliamentary finance committee at the Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu, Abdalle was seized by security agents and forcibly taken to an unknown location.
His arbitrary detention and that of other journalists have been widely condemned by Somali media organizations and have prompted calls for his immediate release.
The Somali Journalists Syndicate, the Somali Media Association, and the Somali Journalists Union have called on the Somali government to respect the rights of journalists and to release Abdalle Ahmed Mumin and other journalists who have been arbitrarily detained.
