MOGADISHU (SD) – Somali prime minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble has today arrived in Balidogle airbase in the outskirts of Somali capital, Mogadishu.
The base in Lower Shabelle region which houses unknown number of US special forces, Somali special forces is located some 100km (60 miles) west of the capital Mogadishu.
Sources privy to the development said the premier’s trip to the base is to bid farewell to departing US forces.
Balidogle airbase had been a launching site for US drones targeting terrorists on Somalia, for a close to decade.
The outgoing president Donald Trump set January 20 as the final exit day for US troops in Somalia to fulfill a 2016 campaign promise to bring US soldiers home from places like Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia and Germany.
US mission in Africa has been helping Somalia to set up an elite Somali counterterrorism unit, the Danab, to annihilate terrorists in horn of Africa nation.
The US forces were also collaborating with Somali forces in south of the country in the drone pre-emptive attacks against Al Shabaab fighters.
This week alone, US and Somali governments confirmed that two airtrikes which destroyed al-Shabaab compounds in Kunya-Barow town of Lower Shabelle region.
