Somali President and Chinese Ambassador Discuss Somaliland and Taiwan Political Ties

Mogadishu (SD) – The President of the Federal Government of Somalia Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo met with the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Qin Jian at Villa Somalia today.

In a press statement from Villa Somalia, President Farmajo and Ambassador Qin Jian discussed the relationship between Somaliland and Taiwan.

“The two countries have strengthened their unified stance on respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia and China. The President shared with Ambassador Qin Jian that Somalia respects China’s unity.” the press release said.

The statement also said China is committed to the preservation of the nationhood and unity of Somalia.

Taiwan, which enjoys limited international recognition, has recently forged diplomatic ties with Somaliland, the move angered China, saying that Taiwan is part of China and that the government of China represents all of China.

The Chinese Ambassador to Mogadishu didn’t give details of his meeting with Somali President and is also yet to directly address the Somaliland and Taiwan diplomatic relationship.

Somaliland and Taiwanese authorities have accepted credentials from their perspective Ambassadors soon to be located in Hargeisa and Taipei.
