Somali president finds necessary to responds to his Cabinet’s call for timely elections

Mogadishu (SD) – A statement from the Somali presidential palace stated that President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo welcomed the Somali cabinet’s call for the upcoming election to be held on time.

“The president emphasized the importance of strengthening democracy in the country and improving the electoral process, while returning the power back to the Somali people, ” said the statement from Villa Somalia.

President Farmajo also pointed out how important it is to not normalize a term extension in the country, and to conduct elections in accordance with the Constitution and the Electoral Law, in a climate of solidarity, consultation and consensus.

President Farmajo’s statement came after the Somali Cabinet declared the country’s elections should be held on time and that there should be no term extensions.

“The elections must be held on time, because term extension can lead to political, security and constitutional crises ”, said Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre.

The PM’s call for timely election are contrary to those of the country’s electoral Commission, which told the parliament recently that it could not hold the election on time.
