Mogadishu May 26, 2023 (SD) – A deadly attack carried out by Al Shabaab militants targeted African Union peacekeeping force ATMIS stationed in the town of Buulamareer in the Lower Shabelle region.
The attack by Al Shabaab resulted in significant casualties and damages, including deaths and injuries, inflicted upon the Ugandan troops deployed as part of the peacekeeping mission.
Al Shabaab’s media outlets released images of slain Ugandan soldiers, showcasing the group’s claim of responsibility. Additionally, Al Shabaab also circulated photos of captured military equipment belonging to the ATMIS peacekeeping force.
It is unclear the exact number of casualties suffered by the deployed ATMIS peacekeeping troops, as Al Shabaab only released several images depicting soldiers who were killed in action.
The ATMIS peacekeeping mission in Somalia has confirmed the recent attack carried out by Al-Shabaab militants on their military base located in the town of Buulamareer, in the Lower Shabelle region.
According to the ATMIS, the Al-Shabaab attack involved car bombings that targeted their positions, resulting in casualties among the ATMIS forces defending against the attack.
The ATMIS also reported that the attack resulted in heavy fighting, with both sides sustaining significant losses.
Al-Shabaab claimed to have killed 137 Ugandan soldiers in the attack on Buulamareer, while also inflicting casualties on other ATMIS troops.
