Somalia: Al Shabaab requests Dialogue

Mogadishu January 07, 2023 (SD) – -The Deputy Defense Minister of Somalia, Abdifatah Qasim said Al-Shabaab has requested dialogue with the government.

“Al-Shabaab has requested negotiations, there are two types of Khawarij [extremists], some are foreigners and others are locals who have the opportunity [to negotiate], but those who have come to invade the country have no right to negotiate, they must leave the country. Those who are local can surrender at any time, but there is no room for negotiation, they must adhere to government and surrender, and return to their people.” said Deputy Defense Minister Abdifatah Qasim.

The Deputy Defense Minister said despite the request the government is determined in carrying out the president’s order to eliminate Al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab did not confirm the government’s claim about the proposed talks.

The announcement comes at a time when government troops are waging a fierce battle against the militants and took control of many areas from Al-Shabaab.
