Mogadishu July 27, 2023 (SD) – President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, met with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes, Mr. Brian Nelson, and presented the efforts made by the Somali government to counter the financial and economic activities of Al-Shabaab.

The President emphasized that the enactment of laws and regulations to combat terrorism financing and the successful implementation of various anti-money laundering measures have significantly impacted the terrorist group’s funding sources and their operations in certain regions of the country.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud also discussed with Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes, Brian Nelson, the partnership between Somalia and the United States in countering terrorism financing, as well as the second phase of the country’s efforts to disrupt Al-Shabaab and the progress made in the Somali debt relief program.

Moreover, Brian Nelson expressed his gratitude for the President’s leadership and the meeting they had, stating that peace and stability in Somalia have a positive impact both at the regional and global levels. He also affirmed the commitment of his country to support the Somali government in its efforts to combat terrorism financing and enhance the fight against money laundering.
