Somalia announced its candidacy for the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) seat

MOGADISHU (SD) – The Somali government has announced, for the first time, its candidacy for a seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC).

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) described this bid as rooted in equality and participation in Africa’s peace strategy, according to a statement issued by Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Ministry’s statement officially confirmed Somalia’s candidacy for the AU PSC seat for the 2025–2028 term.

“The importance of this seat for Somalia lies in its desire to play a significant role in Africa’s peace and security agenda, reflecting its journey of reform and its commitment to Pan-Africanism principles,” the statement said.

Somalia’s application has been formally submitted to the African Union, but the other countries competing for the seat have not yet been disclosed.

Notably, Somalia previously withdrew its bid to lead the African Union and instead secured a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
