Somalia announces an special prosecutor against media abuse

Mogadishu (SD) – Somalia’s Attorney General Dr. Suleiman Mohamed Mohamud has today appointed a special prosecutor for those involved in crimes against Somali journalists.

A statement from the Attorney General’s office said it was important to prosecute those who organized, planned, and carried out the killings and harassment of journalists.

The statement also said that the government was stepping up its efforts to hold individuals accountable for alleged abuses against Somali journalists, the statement did not announce the name of the appointed prosecutor.

This is the first time a prosecutor has been appointed for the abuse of journalists, its not clear whether the unnamed prosecutor will also investigate Somali government abuses against journalist or not.

Somalia is one of the countries that journalists are targeted by different groups with killings, arrests, injuries and threats.
