Somalia confirms Turkish plans to build a satellite launch base in Somalia

MOGADISHU (SD) – The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has announced that Turkey is planning to build a satellite launch base in Somalia, which will enhance Ankara’s long-range missile testing program.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, speaking at an event in Mogadishu, stated that this project will significantly contribute to job creation and increase Somalia’s revenue.

“Personally, I believe that the importance of Somalia hosting Turkey’s satellite launch base far outweighs billions of dollars and the opportunities that the project will bring,” said President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Last September, Bloomberg reported that Somalia, located on the eastern tip of the African continent, is a suitable location for launching rockets into the Indian Ocean without the risk of debris falling into populated areas or other countries.

Establishing a satellite launch site in Somalia will boost Turkey’s ambitions to join the space race, traditionally dominated by global powers.

Turkey has been planning to launch a rocket for several years. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud did not disclose the exact location for the satellite launch base project.

Turkey is among the few foreign powers strengthening ties with Somalia, as the African country seeks to rebuild after years of clan-based conflicts.
