Somalia delivers $ 12.7 million to Waaheen Market Emergency Committee

MOGADISHU (SD) – Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled confirmed that Somalia’s federal government sent $12.7 million to the Waheen market emergency committee in Hargeisa today.

The money will be used to fund emergency services in response to the fire that destroyed the main market in Hargeisa.

The money was deposited in Dahabshiil Bank accounts set up by the Waaheen Market Emergency Committee, after President Bihi failed to have the money deposited to a government accounts.

The Somaliland government have been insisting in recent days that the $12.7 million initially donated by the International community was meant to curb Covid-19 economic effects.

However the International community and the Somali Federal Government officials insisted the money be used help the Waaheen fire victims only, leading to President Bihi to request an additional two billion dollars from the donors.

The mayor of Somaliland’s capital, Hargeisa, Abdikarim Ahmed Mooge, said an estimated $ 2 billion in assets were lost in the Waheen market fire.
