Mogadishu April 30, 2023 (SD) – An educational umbrella in the Banadir region has strongly criticized a new television series called “ARDAY,” which was launched by Bile TV and aired for three days last week.
The series, which was filmed in the capital city of Mogadishu, was described by the Banadir education officials as a work that goes against the teachings of Islam and the traditional Somali culture, with “ARDAY” meaning Student.
In a joint statement, the education officials called on the production company to withdraw the series and to apologize to the public for any harm it may have caused. The officials also warned that any attempts to air similar content in the future will not be tolerated.
Bile TV, the production company behind the series, has defended its work, saying that it was meant to promote education and raise awareness about social issues. However, they have yet to respond to the criticism from education officials.
The launch of the series has sparked a debate among Somalis on social media, with some expressing support for the educational aspect of the series, while others have criticized it for its potential to fuel Anti Somali cultural attitudes.
