BELEDWEYNE (SD) – -At least 8 people have died in the flooding of the Shabelle River in the city of Baladweyne within the last 24 hours, according to the local administration in the district.
The Mayor of Baladweyne, Nadar Tabaax Maalin, stated that the two days of continuous rain have caused significant damage, including the submersion of homes and the destruction of several water wells, leading to the loss of both lives and property.
Mayor Nadar mentioned that relief efforts are underway, with the municipality and other organizations working to assist those affected by the floods. He noted that the floods have severely impacted the livelihoods of the residents, causing damage to agricultural fields and disrupting daily life.
Local authorities are calling for support from humanitarian organizations to provide immediate assistance to those affected, including food, shelter, and medical aid. The flooding is a recurring challenge in the region, and efforts are needed to develop long-term solutions to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters on the community.
