Somalia: Journalist Gurbiye regains freedom

Mogadishu (SD) – Journalist Abdiaziz Ahmed Gurbiye have been released from jail after five days in detention in Mogadishu, the release comes as Somali president denied he ordered his detention.

The deputy director of Goobjoog Media Group, was arrested on April 14th, a day after he posted on his Facebook page that President Farmajo had taken a ventilator, donated to Martini Hospital.

Even though Villa Somalia has previously denied Goobjoog’ claim that President Farmajo ordered Gurbiye’s arrest. A letter dated April 15th, the Benadir Regional Court Judge ordered to keep the journalist in custody at the Central Prison.

The court’s letter states that journalist Abdiaziz Ahmed Gurbiye is being held under articles 220 of the Somali Penal Code: Insulting the president’s dignity and authority; Article 271 Showing disrespect for government officials using cartoon caricature.

The federal government of Somalia is often accused of indiscriminate arrest, violating Somali Journalist constitutional rights, curbing freedom of expression in the country.
