Somalia officially joins the EAC

ENTEBBE (SD) -The Federal Republic of Somalia has officially become a member of the East African Community (EAC), at an event that took place today in the city of Arusha in Uganda.

A high-level delegation led by Somalia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, who was in charge of overseeing Somalia’s accession to the EAC, signed the agreement in Entebbe, Uganda.

The signing ceremony was attended by the President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Dr. Mathuki the Secretary General of the EAC congratulated Somalia on becoming the newest member of the EAC, a regional bloc comprising 8 countries, aimed at enhancing cooperation among partner states in political, economic, and societal spheres.

He stated that Somalia’s membership would strengthen the EAC’s vision of peaceful coexistence and inclusive development in the East African region.

He praised Somalia for meeting the requirements of the EAC agreement, urging Somalia to adhere to and implement the rules and regulations of the EAC.

Somalia’s Minister of Commerce, Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, stated that Somalia is committed to participating in the EAC’s objectives, such as trade, economic integration, healthcare, education, agriculture, peace, and security.
