Somalia: Parliament lays the groundwork for the one-person, one-vote elections

MOGADISHU (SD) -Today, members of both Houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia held a joint session and took a preparatory step towards a one-person, one-vote election.

The parliamentarians approved the procedural guidelines for the joint sessions required to pass three key legislative bills. These bills are crucial for the temporary joint committee of both Houses, which is responsible for preparing the electoral laws, regulations for political parties, and the law on the establishment of the electoral, boundary, and related committees.

The guidelines were presented to the joint session by the Minister of Interior of Somalia, and they were approved by 170 members of parliament with no opposition or abstentions.

This action by the members of the Federal Parliament of Somalia lays the groundwork for the one-person, one-vote elections that the government aims to implement, despite significant opposition from some political factions.
