Somalia: Parliamentarians debate term extension for the Parliament and the President

Mogadishu June 03, 2023 (SD) – Today, the Members of the Federal Parliament of Somalia engaged in extensive discussions regarding the extension of the term of the President and the Federal Parliament of Somalia.

During the parliamentary session, the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Member Abdullahi Abshiroow, chaired the meeting.

A significant number of Members of Parliament expressed their support for the term extension, while some MPs opposed the extension and advocated for a timely election.

Member Hassan Abdi Ismail highlighted the legal implications of extending the term and emphasized the need to adhere to the agreed-upon timeline, expressing concerns about the actions of the previous government under President Farmaajo.

Similarly, Member Abdikadir Osoble questioned the legitimacy of the extension, stating that if the Parliament accepts the term extension without discussing its implications, it would set a dangerous precedent.

Another Member, Abdirahman Abdishakur, expressed his opinion, stating that President Hassan Sheikh had previously opposed term extensions, and should not be seeking one for himself.

Other Members of Parliament also expressed significant support for the term extension, highlighting the importance of achieving stability and conducting inclusive elections based on the principle of one person, one vote.
