Washington September 16, 2022 (SD) -The United States praised the efforts of Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in the war against Al-Shabaab, with America promising to continue their support to ensure peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin praised the Somali President at a reception with President Mohamud at the Pentagon last night.

Austin and Sheikh discussed the work done by the Somali government on fighting Al-Shabaab in Somalia and the support provided by the US to the Somali security forces.

“Somalia and the Horn of Africa have entered a crucial period of transition. This period will be especially important given the ongoing hostilities in Ethiopia, and the persistent threat of Al-Shabab, which continues to launch high-profile, cruel and brazen attacks on civilians. Our cooperation here is crucial, Mr. President, and we stand ready, as your partners.” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed US commitment to countering violent extremism, and expressed how happy the Pentagon is in hosting President Hassan Sheikh Mohamad and his delegation.

President Hassan Sheikh talked about the recent success his admiration had in fighting Al Shabaab.

“Since June 2022, SNA has let, Somali National Army, has been able to partner with the local forces in the removal of Al-Shabaab from 20% of the area they controlled before. 

“We recognize that defeating Al-Shabaab requires a multi-faceted approach that includes effective and accountable security forces and inclusive state-building process, the ability of the state to provide rule of law and critical services to the public” said Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Somali President.

President Hassan Sheikh is expected to meet with other heads of the United States government before leaving for New York City in the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
