Somalia: Presidential candidates support Berbera Port development

Mogadishu (SD) Politicians Abdirahman Abdishakur and Abdikarim Guled from the Opposition Candidates Union spoke about the Berbera port which has undergone major renovations, and congratulated the people and the Government of Somaliland.

Both Politicians Abdirahman Abdishakur and Abdikarim Guled posted these message on their Facebook pages.

Abdirahman Abdishakur, a candidate for the presidency of Somalia, criticized President Farmajo in his statement, saying the president was opposed to Somaliland’s development.

“Farmajo and his government opposed the expansion of the Berbera Port, with the slogan it being foreign ambitions,” Abdirahman Abdishakur said in a post on his Facebook page.

Politician Abdirahman Abdishakur said he has always stood for the development of Berbera.

“Our position that day was that developing a Somali owned infrastructure would not be a problem for the Somalia government.” Abdirahman Abdishakur added.

On the other hand, Politician Abdikarim Guled also said he welcomed the development of the Berbera port.

“I commend the overall development of Somaliland, in particular the expansion and development of the Berbera Port, ”he said in a statement.
Adding “We have a duty to praise, commend and encourage every Somali Region that makes progress”.

The statements come as Berbera port’s first phase was launched after a major renovation by DDP World.

DP World’s Berbera port agreement with Somaliland began in 2016, and was approved by the Somaliland House of Representatives on August 9 of that year.
