Somalia: Requirements for Candidates for Both Houses and Election Delegates Announced

Mogadishu (SD) – President Farmajo, Heads of Regional States and Governor of Benadir Region have issued the requirements for candidates for both Houses of the Somali Parliament and the delegates that elect them.

Requirements for candidates running for both Houses of the Federal Parliament are:

Be a citizen of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Be of sound mind.

He/She is at least 25 years old.

His / her citizenship rights have not been suspended by a court decision for the last five (5) years.

Must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent experience.
Has no affiliation with or any affiliation with terrorist groups.

provide a criminal record from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Every candidate running for the House of the People or the Upper House of the Federal Parliament of Somalia must pay the registration fee and deposit it in the bank account of the Electoral Commission.

The registration fee for candidates for the Upper House will be $ 20,000 (twenty thousand dollars) for each candidate.

The registration fee for candidates running for the House of Representatives will be $ 10,000, (Ten Thousand Dollars) per candidate.

Candidate registration fees will not be refunded.

The criteria for electing members of the Somali parliament have also been set.

  1. He must be a Somali and belong to the community that got the seat in the 4.5 power-sharing system.
  2. He must not be younger than 18 years old

3- That he is sane and able to vote

4- Understand election responsibilities

5- Not to be a candidate for either House

6- Not have a final sentence from a court of law for the last five years.

7.He shall not hold any political office during the election

8- Not to have any contact with terrorist groups
