NY (SD) – Somalia officially joined the United Nations Security Council yesterday, Wednesday, after 54 years, having previously been elected to a non-permanent seat for the years 2025-2026.
Somalia is now one of the 15 members of the Security Council, specifically one of the 10 non-permanent members. It will represent Eastern Africa for a two-year term starting from January 1st of this year.
Somalia’s Ambassador to the United Nations, H.E. Abukar Dahir Osman (Abukar Baalle), stated that Somalia is committed to upholding the UN Charter and is dedicated to global peace and security.
Somalia was elected to this position in June of the previous year, 2024. Alongside Somalia, other countries joining the Security Council yesterday include Pakistan, Panama, Denmark, and Greece.
