NY (SD)-Somalia is expected to obtain a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, running unopposed for the African seat.
The election is scheduled to take place during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly on June 6.
Somalia will be representing the African continent, with no other African countries competing for the seat. This will be the second time Somalia has held a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, the first being from 1971 to 1972.
Somalia has received strong support from the African Union, which endorsed Somalia as the sole candidate for the African seat.
Starting from January 1, 2025, Somalia and other non-permanent members of the Security Council will begin their term, which will end on December 31, 2026.
