Somalia’s 11th parliament sworn in and elects interim speakers

MOGADISHU (SD) – Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble today attended the swearing-in ceremony of members of both houses of the 11th parliament in Mogadishu.

Representatives from the international community and other government officials were also present at the swearing-in ceremony for members of both houses of the Somali Federal Parliament.

A statement from the Electoral Commission said that they had certified and sworn-in all but one member of the House of the People and the Upper House elected in the South West constituencies.

More than 300 certified lawmakers attended the ceremony at the Halane compound, where they were officially sworn in on today.

Outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, congratulated members of both Houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia on taking the oath of office, outlining the role that the people expect from the new parliamentarians in strengthening governance, developing the country and strengthening unity.

MP Abdisalan Haji Dhabancad and Sen. Mohamed Ali Gagaab were elected to be the interim chairmen of the two houses of the Somali parliament, both speakers confirmed that the first session of the 11th Parliament will be on Saturday.
