Somalia’s election commission announces election timetable

Mogadishu (SD) – Somalia’s disputed federal election commission has released the schedule for the upcoming 2020/21 elections, specifically for the upper house and the lower house of the Somali parliament.

The commission announced that registration of candidates for the upper house election would begin on December 26th, giving the country’s administration six days to publish the list of candidates, which falls on December 29th.

A statement from the commission said the election of members of the upper house of parliament by the country’s state parliaments would take place in accordance with the election process and the agreement of the National Consultative Assembly.

The committee also said that from December 31 to January 6, 2021, to complete the election of seats in the upper house.

The commission finally called on all electoral stakeholders to participate effectively in the election process, suggesting that the observers to play their role in monitoring the elections to happen and to ensure the transparency of the country’s electoral process.

The move comes at a time when tensions between the federal government and opposition candidates is heightened and have boycotted the commission’s new timetable for the election, exacerbating tensions over the election.
