NY (SD) -Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, delivered a significant speech at the United Nations Security Council, highlighting the ongoing national consultations in Somalia led by President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, with a focus on inclusive governance and electoral reforms.
Minister Fiqi unequivocally rejected Ethiopia’s territorial claims, accusing it of exploiting the counter-terrorism efforts to annex Somali land. He also mentioned the seizure of illegal arms originating from Ethiopia, which is fueling local conflicts and enabling extremist groups to gain strength. He described these actions as clear violations of Somalia’s sovereignty.
Additionally, the Minister reaffirmed Somalia’s support for the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and highlighted the robust efforts in the fight against Al-Shabaab and ISIS. He confirmed that government services have been extended to liberated areas and emphasized Somalia’s commitment to working with the United Nations to navigate critical phases, particularly in security and governance.
The Minister’s speech underscored Somalia’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty, combat illegal arms trafficking from Ethiopia, strengthen international cooperation, and implement domestic reforms.
