Somalia’s international partners expresses concern over Guriel conflict

Mogadishu (SD) – A statement from Somalia international partners addressed the crisis in Guriel in Galgadud region, where Ahlu Sunna and Somali government forces have been engaged in deadly clashes for the past three days.

“International partners are alarmed by the continued fighting in the town of Guriel in the Federal Member State of Galmudug. Not only is the conflict causing severe humanitarian suffering to the people of the area, but it is also distracting from the urgent priorities of completing the electoral process and countering al-Shabaab.” said the partner’s statement.

The countries and international organizations that signed the communiqué called on both sides to immediately cease hostilities and end the conflict through dialogue.

“ We urge that the parties to this conflict immediately halt the fighting and resolve their differences through negotiations. International partners are prepared to support such efforts if requested by the parties.” Said the partner’s statement.

Galmudug’s Guriel district has been a hotbed of violence in recent weeks following the capture of the area by ASWLJ forces.
