Somalia’s President Opens National Dialogue Forum on Political Future

MOGADISHU (SD) – The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has officially opened the National Dialogue Forum to discuss the country’s political future. Key agenda items include strengthening national unity, completing the constitution, election processes, the fight against terrorism, and building stronger governance

The forum has faced criticism from opposition leaders who claim it won’t properly address election-related disputes.

In his opening speech, President Hassan Sheikh emphasized his government’s work to establish direct elections where Somalis can choose their leaders. He noted that both government and opposition leaders agree on moving away from the old, problematic clan-based voting system.

“This forum shows our commitment to hearing different views,” the President said. “We’re opening doors for discussions that were missing before. Everyone is welcome to help build our governance system.”

While thanking international partners for their support, the President stressed that Somalis must take responsibility for their country’s future.

Former leaders, government officials, and civil society members at the forum pledged support for creating a united vision for Somalia’s development, focusing on peace, justice and progress.

The discussions come at a critical time as Somalia works to establish stable, democratic governance systems.
