Mogadishu Feb 15, 2023 (SD) – Yesterday, members of Somalia’s Upper House from the Sool region submitted a motion to the Senate regarding the current situation in the region, particularly in the city of Las Anod.
The situation is escalating, and violence has recently spread to other parts of Sool, with conflict continuing in many areas. The two sides have previously suggested that the conflict could be resolved through peaceful means, but it now seems that a peaceful resolution is unlikely.
Ali Shaaban, the first deputy speaker of the Senate said during the session yesterday that the motion had been received, but would be reviewed before a decision was made. The motion pertains to the situation in Las Anod and the entire Sool region, which has recently experienced clashes between the Somaliland army and other local factions.
The situation is worrying and has resulted in recent violence that has impacted the stability of Somaliland, as conflict continues in the area, the fighting continued to its 9th day.
Both sides have repeatedly stated in the past that they are willing to commit to a ceasefire and engage in peace talks, but so far this has not materialized and has remained only rhetoric.
