ADDIS ABABA (SD) – President of Somaliland Muse Bihi Abdi has signed an agreement with the Ethiopian government, allowing them access to a portion of the Red Sea coast for strategic purposes.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Muse Bihi signed the agreement in Addis Ababa, as reported by the Ethiopian government’s media. Ethiopia has secured long-term strategic access to the Red Sea, and recently, Prime Minister Abiy stated that this move is aimed at ensuring national interests.
Somaliland, in turn, has gained significant diplomatic leverage beyond the regional cooperation, including a possible recognition.
On the other hand, the Cabinet of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia has been convened for an emergency meeting on Tuesday, to the MoU between Somaliland and Ethiopia.
This development raises legal and territorial integrity concerns among Somalis everywhere including those in Somaliland.
