Somaliland Electoral Commission: We can hold the presidential elections in nine months

Hargeisa September 24, 2022 (SD) – The new Somaliland Electoral Commission has today announced that it is can hold the country’s presidential election in Nine months.

The Electoral Commission said in a statement that the presidential election is could not be held as scheduled this year, due to financial and technical issues, and they need 9 months from October to prepare the election.

“The National Electoral Commission of the Republic of Somaliland, can technically hold the presidential election in nine months time, starting from 1st October 2022”. the commissioners said.

The committee added that during the 9 month period, they will prepare the finances and the know how for the election, including voter registration.

The Electoral Commission is the only body authorized by law to declare when the elections will be held, and are responsible for conducting the elections.

On the other hand, Somaliland’s opposition parties, Waddani and UCID have welcomed the election committee’s decision to hold the presidential elections in Somaliland within 9 months.

The Commission’s announcement comes just days after the House of Representatives passed amendments to the country’s electoral laws.

The Electoral Commission in their statement did not address the election of the new political organizations that the government is pushing, as there are no legitimate electoral laws for it.
