Somaliland: Four arrested candidates charged with treason

Hargeisa (SD) – The Minister of Information, Culture and Awareness of the Republic of Somaliland held a press conference at the Ministry’s headquarters and talked about the arrested opposition candidates.

Somaliland’s Information Minister Suleyman Kore says the four candidates have been charged with treason, some in custody and others on the run.

The opposition candidates have been accused of links to Somalia and will be brought to justice, Minister Kore said.

These UCID and Wadani candidates are running for local councils and parliament, in the upcoming elections.

The names of the four accused candidates are Abdirahman Yusuf Ali, Kubra Haji Hussein, Qasim Ibrahim Suleiman and Anab Abdi Hirsi.

Somaliland police released the screen shots, saying it was evidence of the charges against Qasim Adan Suleiman, a candidate for the Sool region in the upcoming parliamentary elections, who is currently detained in Hargeisa.

WADDANI and UCID parties issued a joint statement on alleged abuses against opposition candidates.

Somaliland parties have issued an statement expressing concern over the conduct of the by-elections in Somaliland, accusing the government of interfering in the elections.

Wadani and UCID called on President Bihi to stop his government’s abuses and misconduct.
