Somaliland government files election dispute with Supreme Court

Hargeisa (SD) – The Somaliland government made yet another contention decision regarding the election dispute, escalating the election tensions in the country.

Somaliland’s cabinet held their weekly video conference today and discussed the election dispute, deciding to involve the country’s Supreme Court in the matter.

“The council held a lengthy debate on holding elections, and the council decided to refer the issue to the Supreme Court of the Republic of Somaliland.” said a statement from the Somaliland presidency.

Conflict over Somaliland’s local and parliamentary elections has dragged on for years, currently there additional opposition from some communities in Somaliland, arguing that they are not getting a fair proportional representation in Parliament.

Somaliland’s president and the three national parties repeatedly failed to come to an agreement on holding the elections on time.
