Somaliland Governments shut down two Independent TV Stations

Hargeisa (SD) – Somaliland security forces were seen shutting down Universal TV’s operational center in Hargeisa today.

Somaliland Minister of Information Hon Suleiman Yusuf Ali Koore said Universal Television violated the National Memorial on June 26 and it resulted in the suspension.

The minister said Universal Television was refused to broadcast the President of the Republic of Somaliland speech at the national event on 26 June.

The Minister noted that they requested that Universal Television authorities broadcast the 26 June ceremony in Hargeisa and refused so we shut them down in Somaliland.

Yusuf Ali Koore, speaking to local media also said the government knows that independent TV stations are privately owned but must broadcast news and events regarding national celebrations.

The Minister of Information, Culture and Education of Somaliland also admitted the government shut down Star Television after they made a journalistic mistakes.

Neither Television stations responded to the government shutting down their stations in Hargeisa.
