Somaliland House of Elders approves the holding of local and regional elections

The Somaliland House of Elders has agreed with the proposal of the Electoral Commission and the three political parties to hold joint elections for the House of Representatives on 31 May 2021.

Somaliland’s president recently called on the House of Elders to rescind their decision and extend the election commission’s recommendation.

The House of Elders of the Republic of Somaliland today held an extraordinary session and agreed on the date set by the Electoral Commission for the election of the Municipal and House of Representatives and dismissed their previous decision of extending the term of the House of Representatives.

The President of Somaliland, Muse Bihi, has commended the decision of the House of Elders to hold the by-elections on 31/5/2021, in line with the timeline agreed upon by the Electoral Commission and the national parties.

The Chairman of Wadani Party Mr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro) commended the House of Elders for their decision to support the National Electoral Commission’s date for the May 2021 Representative and Constituency elections.

“After much controversy and lengthy extensions to the House of Representatives and local councils, I congratulate the Somaliland House of Elders for their decision today in favor of the National Electoral Commission’s proposal for Local Government and Representatives Election Day on 31.5.2021″ said Abdinasir Yusuf Osman, a UCID official.

Somaliland’s parliamentary and local elections, which faced many challenges, appears to have a clear date and an agreement on it is process.
