Somaliland Lifts Khat Ban Amid COVID-19 Outbreak

Hargeisa (SD) – Somaliland National Covid-19 prevention Committee has today issued a decree lifting the ban on the sale of Kat in the country.

According to a statement by the committee, Kat traders are allowed to import the drug starting today, the announcement coming less than weeks of banning the substance, in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

The announcement makes Somaliland the only Somali inhabited region in Horn of Africa that Kat is legal.

Somaliland imports the drug from Ethiopia, spending a large portion of its national income on the drug.

Insiders were perplexed to see how quickly the Bihi government reversed itself on its recent decision to ban the drug, sighting both internal and Ethiopian pressure.

It will be interesting to see how the government manages the community spread of COVID-19 in the country, while Kat, a potential super spreader is allowed back in the country.
