Somaliland ministers discuss drought situation, as casualties mount

HARGEISA (SD) -The Somaliland Council of Ministers held its 87th meeting in Hargeisa today, chaired by President Muse Bihi Abdi and accompanied by Somaliland Vice President Abdirahman Sayli’i.

The Cabinet meeting addressed a number of issues including the security situation of the country, the current widespread droughts in some parts of Somaliland, and other crucial issues.

Somaliland’s Minister of Information and Government Spokesman Saleban Yusuf Ali Koore, addressed the media at the end of the conference, noted that the drought situation in the country was the focus of this week’s cabinet session.

Further issues discussed at the meeting included how the public should beware of deception and fabrications on social media, and the council urged the public to stay away from news outlets that are far from the truth.

Additionally, the Minister stated that the council had an in-depth discussion on the security situation, and that the Minister of Interior Affairs, Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, had given a detailed briefing to the council stating that the overall security situation in the country was prosperous.

The news comes a time when person has also died of dehydration in the past few hours in Dokoshay district of Togdher region in Somaliland, according to Governor Mohamed Abdullahi Nafaqo.

Speaking to the media, Governor Mohamed Nafaqo said that the drought in several parts of Togdheer region has left persons and animals dead, and people in dire straits.

Nafaqo called for an immediate and internal emergency response and has confirmed that one person has died of thirst in Dokoshay district.

Drought has spread to all parts of Somaliland this year, and there is widespread controversy over the lack of adequate assistance, as well as the provision of emergency assistance in some areas.
