Somaliland: National Parties vow to accept election results

HARGEISA (SD) – A meeting held at the Presidential Palace of Somaliland between the outgoing President Muse Bihi Presidential Candidate of the Waddani Party, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, has concluded with an agreement to conduct elections peacefully.

The meeting, organized by the former President of Somaliland, Dahir Riyale Kahin, saw both sides affirming key points related to the defense of Somaliland and the conduct of transparent elections without interference.

“It was agreed upon to work together to safeguard Somaliland’s sovereignty, collaborate on national defense, ensure that elections are held peacefully, and accept the results of the election competition endorsed by the national parties,” stated a press release issued by the presidency.

Furthermore, it was announced that the parties will hold meetings over the next three days to address and implement these agreements.

The outgoing president expressed gratitude to former President Dahir Riyale Kahin for organizing the meeting and contributing to the nation’s interests.

The meeting comes shortly after the president recently signed into law amendments made to Somaliland’s electoral laws, following a period of disagreement.

Although the Kulmiye, Waddani, and UCID parties had previously disagreed on various issues, they have now reached an agreement on a new electoral system, despite some dissenting voices from certain political organizations opposed to the three-party agreement, viewing the legal changes as unconstitutional.
