HARGEISA (SD) -The Somaliland government has strongly opposed the deployment of Turkish troops to the Somali coast, which are expected to arrive in the Horn of Africa soon.
A statement released by the Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “The Government of the Republic of Somaliland unequivocally rejects the deployment of Turkish naval forces to the Somaliland maritime area.”
“The Republic of Somaliland firmly opposes introducing Turkish naval forces into the internationally recognized Somaliland territory. These areas clearly define international laws and are crucial to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Somaliland,” stated the Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This comes at a time when Turkish President Erdogan recently asked that the country’s parliament approve the deployment of Turkish forces to Somalia, in line with a recently signed agreement between the Somali and Turkish governments, which stated that Turkey would protect the Somali coast.
