Somaliland Opposition leader: outgoing president’s speech incited chaos

Hargeisa May 10, 2023 (SD) – The chairman of the opposition party UCID, Engineer Faysal Ali Warabe, strongly criticized the outgoing President of Somaliland, Muse Bihi, accusing him of leading the country towards chaos.

In a presser yesterday, Chairman Warabe denounced the outgoing President’s recent speeches at a joint parliamentary session as divisive and inciting violence.

“In his recent speeches, the President did not talk about uniting our people and ending the armed conflicts that have been tearing our nation apart. Instead, he chose to use inflammatory rhetoric that could lead to chaos,” said Warabe.

Warabe also criticized Bihi’s efforts to divide political parties, accusing him of undermining democracy and the rule of law.

“He has been using his power to suppress the opposition and weaken democracy, and this is unacceptable. It is against the law and the will of the people. Anyone who supports the illegitimate President Bihi’s agenda of dividing Somaliland and instigating chaos will be held accountable,” he warned.

Somaliland is currently facing democratic and social cohesion challenges due to the outgoing president’s autocratic tendencies.
