Somaliland opposition parties react to State media coverage

Hargeisa (SD) – The Secretary General of the Wadani Opposition party Abdullahi Jama Osman (Geeljire) and the Information Secretary of the UCID Opposition party Yusuf Keyse Abdullahi Adan who addressed the media in Hargeisa today welcomed yesterday’s decree issued by the Ministry of Information that the National Media should broadcast the news and programs of the national parties in a neutral and balanced manner.

Abdullahi Jama Osman (Geeljire), the secretary general of the Wadani Party, welcomed the move by the Somaliland Ministry of Information, Culture and Awareness, and said it should have been taken sooner.

The secretary general of the Wadani party advised the ministry of information to take other steps such as finalizing the media law, and called on the independent media to protect the ethics and law of the media in the country.

The UCID party information secretary Keyse Yusuf Abdullahi said that the news and programs of the opposition parties have constitutional rights to be broadcasted on the state media.

He added that as a party they welcome the move and that they plan to expose any shortcomings, noting that opposition parties are the mirror of the government’s shortcomings.

UCID’s information secretary at a press conference addressed issues related to livelihoods and social issues and called on the government to take action.
