Somaliland: Opposition parties welcome electoral dispute mediation

Hargeisa August 28, 2023 (SD) – The opposition parties of Somaliland, Waddani and UCID, have separated announced their acceptance of the decision made by the mediation committee regarding the electoral dispute in Somaliland.

Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, the Presidential Candidate of Waddani, stated that his party is in agreement with the mediation committee’s decision.

“I, speaking on behalf of myself and Waddani party, unequivocally accept the proposal made by the elders’ mediation committee,” said Irro.

Cirro also extended an olive branch to President Muse Bihi Abdi, suggesting they both accept the elders’ proposal since they had both urged the involvement of elders for a fair solution.

“As a party, we are informing the Guurti (House of Elders) and the House of Representatives that we are willing to cooperate on all legal issues; the country should not suffer from weakness, and a person should not be deprived of their rights,” Irro added.

The other opposition party in Somaliland, UCID, has al so welcomed the decision made by the electoral dispute mediation committee.

UCID Party Chairman, Faysal Ali Warabe, who spoke to the media with military uniform on, stated that as a party, they have accepted the committee’s decision regarding the electoral process.

“As a party of principles and justice, we have decided to accept the committee’s decision. It may have been a bitter pill for us, but if your shirt is being pulled, you have to let it tear,” said Faysal.

Faysal emphasized that the people of Somaliland, unity, and ongoing peace have motivated them to accept the committee’s decision. He called upon the general public to also welcome the decision.

The mediation committee, which was established to facilitate the political dialogue between the government and the opposition, had earlier announced that both the political organizations and the presidency have agreed to implement its decision.

Additionally, it has been reported that the President of Somaliland and the Kulmiye party, the ruling party, have yet to express their satisfaction with the mediation efforts and have to agree to the compromise reached by the mediation committee.
