Somaliland President Meets British Delegation Amid Electoral dispute

HARGEISA (SD) – Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, today received a delegation of MPs from the UK Parliament led by MP. Gavin Williamson at the Presidential Palace.

The President thanked the MPs for the their work on the recent debate in the UK Parliament on Somaliland’s quest for independence, and welcomed the official visit of the MPs to Hargeisa.

The visiting members of the UK delegation are, Hon Gavin Williamson CBE, MP Lord Stuart Polak, Lord Edward Udny Lister and Hon Alun Cairns MP.

The president also called on parliaments around the world, urging them to follow the example of the UK Parliamentarians and dare to present Somaliland’s independence to their respective chambers.

President Muse Bihi Abdi has also called on the UK government to expand their presence in the Somaliland capital, Hargeisa, and to provide comprehensive social services.

The visiting UK delegation, have not as yet spoke about what they’ve discussed with President Bihi who is accused of impeding the country’s electoral reputation.

The visit comes at a time when Somaliland is facing perhaps the most dangerous electoral dispute, were the president is accused of unitarily deciding to postpone the presidential election and instead hold the political associations first, in an attempt to extend his term while at the same time getting rid of the current parties.

It is not known if the visiting UK delegation will be meeting with the opposition parties and other stake holders.
