Somaliland President receives American lobbyists

HARGEISA (SD) – The president of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, received a group of American lobbyists at time the peaceful enclave is facing democratic chalanges.

The president received a delegation of former diplomats, lobbyists and military officials from the Heritage Foundation on unspecified trip to Somaliland.

A statement from the Somaliland presidency did not explain the purpose of the visit and if the worsening political and security situation was discussed.

But the former officers and diplomats from the U.S. met with the Minister of Internal Affairs and the commanders leading the various forces in Somaliland.

According to sources close the presidency, the delegation is not planning to meet with the country’s national opposition parties, civil societies and other institutions such as the House of Representatives.

The delegation consisted of Mr. Tibor Nagy, the former US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Ambassador J. Peter Pham, the former US Ambassador to the Sahel region in West Africa, the former Commander of US Forces in Africa (Africom) General William “Kip” Ward and Mr. Joshua Meservey, from the Heritage Foundation who specialize in African and Middle Eastern politics.
