Berbera (SD) – The Vice President of the Republic of Somaliland, HE Abdirahman Abdillahi Ismail (Saylici) has today unveiled a low-cost solar power project in Berbera, the capital of the Sahil region.
The UAE-funded project, the largest in Somaliland, has been agreed to be co-managed by the Somaliland Ministry of Energy and Minerals and the Berbera power company.
Chairman of the opposition party UCID Eng. Faisal Ali Warabe who spoke at the unveiling, said that the project should have been managed entirely by the government, instead of sharing the proceeds with businessmen.
Somaliland’s Minister of Finance Dr Saad Ali Shire has instead proposed to the electricity companies that the price of electricity be reduced to $ 0.10 cents per unit.
Speaking at the event, Somaliland Vice President Abdirahman Abdillahi Ismail (Saylici) thanked the UAE government for funding the project and called on the community to protect and benefit from it.
Sahil regional administration and the power companies have agreed that from February of this year, the price of electricity in Berbera will be $ 0.10 per unit of 800 Somaliland Shillings.
