Somaliland Senate Approves Electoral Law, no Women’s qouta

Hargeisa (SD) – Members of the Somaliland Guurti House have today held a regular meeting in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, debating the contenceous election law agenda.

The Guurti House session today focused on the debate and approval of the country’s election and voter registration laws, 53 members were in attendance for today’s session.

The House of Elders approved the General Election Law of Somaliland and approved it by 49 MPs, two MPs rejected it and one MP abstained.

The election law was approved by the Somaliland House of Representatives a few days ago, and is now being submitted to President Muse Bihi Abdi.

It is noteworthy that President Bihi recently stated that the House of Representatives should not have passed an election law without women’s quota.

The Somaliland Electoral Commission (SEC) recently announced that preparations are underway for the by-elections, noting that they have begun work on the elections.
