HARGEISA (SD) -The House of Elders of Somaliland has once again unanimously approved the Somaliland Electoral Law, Law No. 91.
The House of Elders of Somaliland has amended the electoral law after the president recently returned it to the legislative bodies following some disputed provisions.
The Houses of Elders and Representatives had previously approved the law, but they disagreed on certain clauses, leading to the president returning it for revision.
Next, the House of Representatives will review the law, with expectations of further discussion if they oppose some of the clauses and more.
Somaliland Vice President Abdirahman Abdullahi Ismail Saylici stated that the electoral law passed by the House of Elders today is a setback for Somaliland’s unity.
He noted that the law passed today was a rushed version that had never been read by the members of parliament, posing a risk to Somaliland’s stability.
Representatives and other officials from Awdal region are particularly concerned about a provision requiring organizations to obtain 20% of votes from each region to become officially recognized parties.
